The Great Outdoors

Where to Get Outside in Big Bear

You don't have to be a serious hiker to enjoy Big Bear's outdoors. There's a paved, stroller- and wheelchair-friendly path along the lake, a birdwatcher's boardwalk, and trailheads that climb into the forest for those who want more.

The Alpine Pedal Path

The paved Alpine Pedal Path runs along the north shore of Big Bear Lake and is open to walkers, joggers, strollers, skaters and wheelchairs — an easy, scenic way to be on the water without a boat. It connects toward the Cougar Crest trailhead and the Big Bear Discovery Center, and it's one of the best spots to see the area's wintering bald eagles.

Stanfield Marsh Wildlife & Waterfowl Preserve

On the east end of the lake, the Stanfield Marsh boardwalk offers an easy, level walk over wetlands with some of the best birdwatching in the valley — a favorite for families and photographers.

Into the National Forest

For more of a climb, the Cougar Crest Trail and dozens of other trailheads lead into the San Bernardino National Forest, which offers over 100 miles of trail for hiking and mountain biking. Many forest trailheads require a valid Adventure Pass for parking — easy to pick up locally.

  • Alpine Pedal Path: paved, flat, ADA-accessible lakeside route
  • Stanfield Marsh: boardwalk + top birdwatching (bald eagles in winter)
  • Cougar Crest & forest trails: 100+ miles of hiking and biking
  • Adventure Pass needed at many national-forest trailheads
